Wonky veg’s big break?
Wonky vegetables are having their moment.
Wonky veg has been around for a little while now, but could they finally be about to get their big break?
The Grocer recently reported that wonky veg buyers have increased to a staggering 4.8 million. This is thought to be a result of the cost of living crisis as shopper buying habits have changed and consumers are looking for ways to cut their spend and look for better value.
Surely this can only be a good thing right?
Even though they may not look perfect, lower cost wonky veg can help make healthy foods more accessible as well as reducing food waste.
This is especially important as the Food Foundation reports that 49% of lower income families are buying less fresh vegetables due to the soaring food prices.
However, growers have expressed concern as even though production of wonky veg is the same as normal veg, farmers get paid less.
And should we really be separating wonky veg from its 'normal' counterparts anyway? Shouldn’t we just enjoy all vegetables for their nutritious qualities?
After all, there are already other lower cost and just as nutritious sources of vegetables such as tinned and frozen products.
The jury's still out, but I think we can all agree, wonky or not, the more veg the merrier.
